Dual Degree Programs

Boston University School of Public Health offers five graduate dual degree programs.

Dual degree candidates allow for greater diversity of skills, interests, and expertise in the student body. Dual degrees also offer students cost and time savings by combing the core elements of two degree programs. The School offers five dual degree programs with Boston University schools and programs that complement the goals of public health education: the MSW/MPH with the School of Social Work; the MD/MPH with the School of Medicine; the JD/MPH with the School of Law; the MBA/MPH with the School of Management; and the MA /MPH with the Division of Graduate Medical Sciences in the Medical School.

Students in the dual degree programs offered at the School fulfill all degree requirements for both programs. Thus, students in the dual degree programs must complete all of the MPH required core courses, choose and complete concentration required courses, fulfill the practicum requirement, and complete a culminating experience. They also must achieve at least a B- in all core courses, have an average GPA of 3.0 or greater, and complete all courses within 5 years. All dual degree candidates complete a minimum of 32 credits at the School of Public Health. In essence, the credits from the collaborating school are used to fulfill elective requirements at the SPH. These elective credits are preapproved by SPH.

The exception to the core course completion rule is the MSW/MPH program in which students are not required to take SB 721, the core Social & Behavioral Sciences course. This is because MSW program students had the knowledge and skills imparted by that course. This does not change the fact that no fewer than 32 credits must be completed at the SPH. Rather, these students may fulfill the credits with another approved course.
