Approximately 100 people attended the one-day BU Conference on Sustainability Research that featured presentations by Boston University faculty with a diverse range of expertise on their research related to sustainability issues.
Following opening [...]remarks by Pardee Center Director Anthony Janetos and College of Arts and Sciences Dean Ann Cudd, Prof. Lucy Hutyra (Earth and Environment) moderated the first session on measuring sustainability. Panelists included Prof. Nathan Phillips (Earth and Environment), Prof. Pam Templer (Biology), Prof. Michael Gevelber (Mechanical Engineering), and Prof. Thomas Little (Electrical and Computer Engineering). Topics included measuring local and regional energy use, carbon storage, commercial buildings energy use, and smart lighting technology.
The BU Conference on Sustainability Research was co-sponsored by the the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Earth and Environment, the Pardee School of Global Studies, and the Institute for Sustainable Energy.

The Frederick S. Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Forum featuring Dean Adil Najam, Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, and Professor of International Relations and Earth & Environment, College of Arts & Sciences; Professor Anthony Janetos, BU [...]College of Arts & Sciences, Earth & Environment; Director of the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future; and Professor Madhu Dutta-Koehler, Associate Professor of the Practice and Program Coordinator, City Planning and Urban Affairs, Department of Applied Social Sciences, Metropolitan College. The event was held on December 1, 2015 and was hosted by the Board of Trustees Advisory Committee on Socially Responsible Investing (ACSRI) as they consider the topic of fossil fuel divestment. This forum was part of the educational activities undertaken by the committee over the last year.

Session IV of the [...]conference focused on the future of sustainability. Pardee Center Director Anthony Janetos set the stage by explaining the importance of prediction, adaptation, and risk management and tolerance. Prof. Les Kaufman (Biology), Prof. James McCann (History), and Prof. Madhu Dutta-Koehler (City Planning and Urban Affairs) followed with a wide-ranging discussion that explored the future of sustainability for marine ecosystems, urban areas, and the interface between human and natural systems.
The BU Conference on Sustainability Research was co-sponsored by the the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Earth and Environment, the Pardee School of Global Studies, and the Institute for Sustainable Energy.

The Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future held a conference, “The Future is Now: Urban Asia in the 21st Century,†on Oct. 8, 2014 in the Metcalf Trustee Center on Boston University’s campus. Experts [...]from BU and elsewhere explored various aspects of the social and environmental impacts of urbanization in Asia. The conference was co-sponsored by BU’s Pardee Center, the Initiative on Cities, the Center for the Study of Asia, Global Programs India Initiatives, and the Center for Global Health and Development, in collaboration with the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and BU’s Metropolitan College.
Opening remarks were given by Anthony Janetos (Director, Pardee Center, BU), Graham Wilson (Co-Director, Initiative on Cities, BU), and Eugenio Menegon (Director, Center for the Study of Asia, BU).
The day consisted of three panels. The first panel, Idea of the City: The Asian Challenge, was moderated by Deepti Nijhawan (Director, Global Programs India Initiative, BU). Speakers included Bish Sanyal (Director, Special Program on Urban and Regional Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Annette Kim (Director, Spatial Analysis Lab, Price School of Public Policy, University of Southern California), and Adil Najam (Dean, Frederick S.
