Voices From The Middle Program Manager (2012-2013)

By cscpr (123)

VFM (Voices from the Middle) is a program that develops the leadership skills of middle schoolers through improving on their individual self-esteem and confidence levels. Our goal this year is to help our students develop these skills through [...]theater-based projects and civic awareness and engagement initiatives. The program branched off from Children’s Theatre in 2002 and has continued to expand its target audience every year since.

VFM has expanded throughout the past couple of years to offer afterschool programming for middle school students. This year, volunteers will mentor students, helping them to discuss important social issues and prepare speeches, stories, songs or poems about these issues. They will be working with middle schools, community centers and social services organizations. The focus of these projects will be civic engagement, and volunteers will discuss with middle-schoolers how they can get involved in affecting social change now.

Time commitment is 2-3 hours per week. Depending on the site placement, there are both semester-long and year-long commitments. No previous experience in teaching or theatre is required. Volunteers travel as a group and take part in classroom activities.

Siblings Program Managers (2012-2013)

By cscpr (123)

Siblings is one of the CSC’s longest running programs, and has been working with the Winship Elementary school for 22 years. S

Siblings is a one-on-one mentoring program that matches BU students (Big Sibs) with children between the ages of [...]6 and 12 (Little Sibs) and is one of the CSC's longest running programs. The program gives children the opportunity to spend time with college students, who serve as positive role models and good friends.

The time commitment is 3-5 hours biweekly for the entire academic year. Program Managers match Big and Little Siblings with similar interests based on the application process, which includes an interview. Siblings then participate in larger program-wide events including the annual Halloween Party and Siblympics. There will also be smaller events through out the year, which in the past have included museum trips, Disney on Ice and Celtics games. Outside of the events, Siblings pairs have the opportunity to plan activities on their own such as trips to Boston parks, museums, dining halls and sporting events.

Siblings should expect to travel to meet up with their Little Sib by walking or by public transportation. The program currently works with Jackson Mann, Winship, St. Patrick and Edison K-8 elementary schools.

Children's Theatre Program Manager (2012-2013)

By cscpr (123)

Children’s Theatre began in 1991 and was the CSC’s first creative arts program. Volunteers brainstorm, write and produce their own original variety shows and skits in a troupe of 10 students through most of the semester.

After the [...]shows are prepared and rehearsed, volunteers perform their creations for children in various hospitals, community centers, after school programs and domestic abuse shelters throughout Boston. CT brings volunteers into the heart of Boston communities to inspire and entertain a diverse audience of children who don’t generally have access to arts education.

Time commitment is about two hours each Thursday night (8pm-10pm) for most of the semester for a program-wide meeting and troupe rehearsal. Towards the end of the semester, meetings are replaced by site visits where volunteers perform their skit and conduct informal theatre workshops that include improv games and cheers.

CT requires no previous theatre experience, and most volunteers don’t have any.

Some of Children’s Theatre’s performance sites include Shriner’s Burn Hospital, The Home for Little Wanderers and The Elizabeth Stone House.

Student Studio Program Managers (2012-2013)

By cscpr (123)

Student Studio is an after-school program run by university students that brings art education to Boston public schools and community centers, especially to those who would not otherwise have access. Through fun and entertaining art lessons, we hope [...]to encourage and promote the importance of art in today’s world.

Student Studio is about more than arts and crafts. It’s an outlet for creative expression and cultural experience for the children and college students that participate. This program provides University volunteers the opportunity to form mentoring relationships with their students while learning about art history and developing creative thinking and artistic skills. It also gives BU volunteers the chance to truly get involved with the Boston community and take a step outside the classroom to learn about the people, places, and culture of our city.

Volunteers do not need to have a background in art. They just need to love kids, want to be a role model and have a wish to make a difference!

The program was founded in 2006. Currently Student Studio works with 9 after-school programs. As a result of increasing demand, Student Studio continues to seek opportunities for expansion for next semester and the years to come . Each week a group of 4 – 5 students travels to one of our partner sites and spends a total of 2 -3 hours including transportation time. The program provides all necessary materials so students do not need to worry about the expense of participating.
