Time commitment is 2-3 hours per week for an entire semester. No previous experience is required. Volunteers are assigned to a site and volunteer with other BU students.
Joining Hands’ sites include Outside the Lines Studio, an alternative day program for artists with disabilities; the LGBT Aging Project, a weekly lunch for senior citizens who identify as LGBT; and Hearth, a project from the Committee to End Elder Homelessness.

Alternative Spring Breaks (ASB) promotes community service, develops leadership skills, and creates strong bonds among its participants. Since its founding in 1988, Boston University student and faculty/staff volunteers spend their spring breaks [...]participating in volunteer work throughout the country addressing issues such as environmental protection, children, affordable housing, hunger, education, HIV/AIDS awareness, and disabilities. Each of the trips is comprised of two Coordinators, ten to thirteen volunteers, and one faculty/staff Chaperone.
Last year, ASB was bigger than ever with over 300 volunteers, 72 coordinators, 36 chaperones, 5 committee chairs, and two program managers. 36 trips traveled all over the country in vans, planes, and buses, and stayed in a variety of accommodations. Service projects ranged from working with organizations like Habitat for Humanity in Seattle, WA building houses for local communities, to working with children at the Target House in Memphis, TN. Overall, the program provides Boston University students with a unique and memorable week of service as an alternative to the traditional college spring break.

VFM (Voices from the Middle) is a program that uses the arts to promote self-confidence and social awareness in middle school students. The program branched off from Children’s Theatre in 2002. Volunteers support two classrooms of eighth [...]graders as they write and produce their own original play.
The program involves volunteers and middle school students in the process of producing, writing and performing the play relevant to the challenges they face as urban youth. Volunteers empower students and encourage self-expression by introducing them to theatre and team-building games and strategies. Middle school students have the opportunity to write, act, direct, design and build with the help and encouragement of volunteers.
