BU Medical Campus: Innovation & Entrepreneurship Series

This spring, Innovate@BU is coming to the BU Medical Campus for a special innovation and entrepreneurship workshop series! Join us for one or all of the workshops to gain skills and strategies for launching new ideas in the medical and public health fields.

Topics:

  • March 18, 4:30-6:30 pm: How to Develop and Present Your Ideas led by Greg Stoller (Instructional Building Room L109C)
  • This session is designed to give participants practical tips on how to develop a rational and balanced idea for a commercial or social venture and how to effectively present the idea to others. Included will be discussions on such topics as defining entrepreneurship, pitching new ideas, adjusting to feedback, and dispelling common myths about the ideation process. This session will be very interactive involving frequent discussions of main points and bringing various practical perspectives into the mix.
  • March 25, 3-4:30 pm: How to Launch a Lean Startup led by Ian Mashiter (Evans Building 720)
  • This session covers the various approaches, techniques, and strategies involved in launching a startup according to the Lean Startup methodology. It takes participants through relevant topics within the early-stage entrepreneurial process, the first formation of an idea through the development of a simple but full-featured business model, and development of a venture presentation that could be used to seek followers and funders.
  • April 1, 3-4:30 pm: How to Build the Right Team led by Peter Marton (Instructional Building Room L109C)
  • This session will help participants understand the key considerations that apply in forming a team that is appropriate to the needs of a particular venture and that will be likely to produce positive results. Students will be exposed to various ideas and theories that relate to effective team member selection, successful team-building, positive approaches to team leadership, the effects of diversity of style and thought on the quality of a team’s results, and other aspects of good and bad team dynamics.
  • April 8, 3-4:30 pm: How to Make Money in a Sustainable Venture led by Gerry Fine (Instructional Building Room L109C)
  • This session takes a practical approach to the making of money in a commercial venture and the development of funding resources in a social venture. It uses simple and practical examples to illustrate various key financial and business concepts and puts them in a useful context. Class discussions will emphasize the need to develop a solid revenue or funding model that will ensure that the venture can be sustainable as it grows over time.

Innovate@BU is a University-wide initiative to enable all BU Terriers to become drivers of innovation in their own lives, careers, and communities.
