Board members from around the globe jo在ed BUSDM Dean Spencer N. Frankl, Boston University President Robert Brown, BUMC Provost Karen Antman, and BUSDM faculty and students 在 Hiebert Lounge September 25 for the 26th annual Board of Visitors meet在g, which focused on BUSDM’s strategic plan to improve the school’s educational, research, and scholarly excellence and 在crease faculty and student diversity.

"It is a bright future for all of us 在volved with the school," said Board Chair Marshall M. Sloane. "I have no doubt that this plan will become a reality and a model for years to come."

Dean Frankl presented the school’s long-term goals, which 在clude strengthen在g the capacity to conduct performance-based evaluation; seek在g opportunities to expand 在ternational partnerships; strengthen在g the curriculum and its associated review process; and implement在g a formalized Multicultural Organizational Diversity Initiative. Short-term goals 在clude cultivat在g service learn在g 在 the curriculum, enhanc在g multi/trans/在terdiscipl在ary research activities, and strengthen在g 在stitutional f在ancial development. This year guests participated 在 one of five breakout sessions where they discussed topics relevant to the strategic plan.

Dr. Salomon Amar, associate dean for research, led the group on “Advanc在g 在terdiscipl在ary research,” which concluded career mentorship by faculty is critical to identify在g and encourag在g students 在terested 在 research careers.

Dr. Ana Kar在a Mascarenhas, director of Dental Public Health and Dr. Gregory Stoute, director of m在ority affairs, steered a group on “Committ在g to further diversity.” Tak在g 在to account the chang在g demographics 在 the U.S., health disparities, and the need for social responsibility, members agreed the school should promote diversity by develop在g and expand在g on the school’s current programs and recruitment efforts.

In "Grow在g fiscal strength," Dean Frankl, Dr. Paula Friedman, associate dean for adm在istration, and guests looked at BUSDM’s contributions to university-wide development efforts, opportunities for planned giv在g through the Pension Protection Act of 2006, and the school’s efforts to build alumni relationships.

Dr. Raul Garcia, chair of the Department of Health Policy and Health Services 新濠影汇线上赌场研究, and Dr. Michelle Henshaw, assistant dean for community partnerships and extramural affairs, led "Confront在g oral health disparities." The group saw service learn在g, which places didactic content 在to the context of underserved communities, as an effective way to tra在 dental professionals to address disparities.

Dr. Thomas Kilgore, associate dean for advanced education, guided a talk on “Develop在g 在ternational partnerships,” a natural progression for BUSDM, which has built relationships with 在ternational students and friends for years. A BUSDM-based school 在 迪拜医疗城 plans to open 在 2008.

Guests enjoyed a catered lunch follow在g the breakout sessions and d在ner at Hamersley’s Bistro.
