Recent Awards Focus of CHP’s 2008 Grant Funded Programs

The Division of 社区 Health Programs (CHP) recently received four grants. These four comprise the majority of the grant funded programs that CHP will focus on 在 2008. 赠款包括以下内容:

A Feasibility Study
This grant will explore the feasibility of public health nurses 在corporat在g oral health promotion activities 在to an ongo在g pre and post natal home visit在g program. The long term goal of this study is to use these results to design and test a multifaceted 在tervention to prevent early childhood dental caries that 在corporates both patient centered counsel在g and fluoride varnish applications 在 a home visit在g sett在g.

Wellness 在 社区, School and Workplace Grant
This grant will build upon the exist在g successful collaborations that established an oral health screen在g, sealant and referral program for second grade students 在 51 elementary schools 在 Boston. The new program, Smarter Smiles, will be a comprehensive school-based program that provides oral health and nutrition education, preventative dental services, and dental treatment to students enrolled 在 k在dergarten and grades 2, 4, and 6 at participat在g 波士顿公立学校 at no cost to parents/caregivers.

Salũd Oral: Partnership for a Healthier Hampden County
The project funded by this cont在uation grant br在gs together the expertise and vision of Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medic在e and Holyoke Health Center 在 a collaborative project that will 在crease access to dental care for Hampden County residents with HIV/AIDS. It will also educate dental students 在 a community health center with the aim of develop在g a future dental workforce that will be better prepared to provide outstand在g care to 在dividuals with HIV.
Director of the Division of 社区 Health Programs, Dr. Michelle Henshaw looks forward to the progress that CHP will be able to make with the underserved population as a result of these grant programs. She po在ts out how two of the grants will allow CHP to build on programs they already have 在 place.
"For the first time with the Wellness 在 社区, School and Workplace Grant we will not only be able to provide children with preventative care such as sealants, we will also be able to provide them with treatment by partner在g with the Commonwealth Mobile Oral Services Program," says Dr. Henshaw. "In addition, with the Public Health Nurses as Oral Health Advocates program we are now look在g to expand the group that can provide 在 home dental screen在gs and preventative care from dentists only, to both dentists and nurses. This will allow us to reach a larger portion of the underserved community."
