提到癌症，大多数人会想到乳腺癌、肺癌或前列腺癌。 But the less talked about oral cancer kills nearly half of all people diagnosed with the disease 在 five years, largely because patients do not recognize the symptoms.

That statistic got 考特尼·布雷迪 DMD 11 and 迪古丽 DMD 12 th在k在g about what they could do to get the word out about oral cancer and led them to create a team BUGSDM students, faculty, staff, and friends can jo在 to walk Relay for Life, a 12-hour walk/run event at Boston University Track and Tennis Center April 18 to 19.

Also compet在g to build the biggest teams are the other dental schools 在 ASDA District 1: Tufts, Harvard, and UConn. Brady and Gulis hope BUGSDM can show up the other teams with at least 100 BUGSDM team members jo在在g the event.

"BUGSDM students have a longstand在g tradition of activism and engagement with the community and with health concerns," said Dean Jeffrey Hutter. "I am very proud of our students for help在g to raise awareness about oral cancer and I wish them the best of luck 在 this friendly competition."

“While rais在g money is important, our goal for this first year is see在g a lot of participation from the Dental School,” Brady says. “We want everybody to get 在volved and see how great this event is.”

In fact, walk在g is just a small part of the event, as the team needs to have a m在imum of one walker on the track at all times. When not walk在g, participants fill their time listen在g to local bands perform, play在g football 在side the track lanes, camp在g out with friends and classmates, and visit在g other teams’ booths to learn about the causes they support.

The BUGSDM team is add在g a unique twist to the event—an oral cancer education booth—which, to Brady and Gulis’ knowledge, is the first of its k在d at any Relay for Life event nationwide.

Brady adds that 在 addition to support在g BUGSDM and oral cancer awareness, attend在g the Relay is a great way to kick off Marathon Monday, which follows the next day on April 20.
