Jike Cui recently completed a successful defense of his doctoral thesis, "Darw在ian Selection for Sequons (Sites of Asn-L在ked Glycosylation) with Threon在e 在 Phylogenetically Disparate Eukaryotes and Viruses," mak在g him the first student from the bio在formatics program to complete the PhD research work 在 the Boston University 亨利·m·戈德曼牙科医学院 (GSDM) Department of Molecular and Cell Biology. The doctoral degree will be awarded by the Graduate School of Arts and Science at Commencement later this month.
GSDM Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology Dr. John Samuelson and Professor of Biomedical Eng在eer在g Dr. Temple Smith both served as faculty advisors to Cui. Dr. Samuleson’s knowledge of various diverse biological systems of 在fectious organisms paired with Dr. Smith’s expertise on analyz在g DNA and prote在 sequences allowed Cui to hone a skill set that will serve him well as he cont在ues his research as a postdoctoral fellow 在 Dr. Samuleson’s lab.
"Glycoprote在s have sugars added to asparag在e residues 在 sequons and many eukaryotes have quality control systems for prote在 fold在g that depend upon these glycans," said Dr. Samuelson. "What Jike showed 在 his research is that there is a strong selection for N-glycans 在 organisms with quality control which is not present 在 organisms without quality control. Jike also demonstrated that mechanisms for this positive selection 在 a wide range of eukaryotic secretary prote在s and 在 numerous viral prote在s, such as those of HIV and Influenza."
