GSDM Contributes Educational Innovation and Scholarship to John McCahan Day

Faculty, staff, and students of Boston University Medical Campus (BUMC) gathered in Hiebert Lounge and throughout the medical campus June 22 for the fourth annual John McCahan Medical Campus Education Day. The event showcased educational innovation and scholarship at BUMC while honoring former Boston University School of Medicine Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. John McCahan.
BUMC Provost Karen Antman began the day with a welcome and introduction of the academic dean panel that included Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM) Assistant Dean for Community Partnerships and Extramural Affairs Dr. Michelle Henshaw. The panel of academic deans spoke about curricular innovations for the 2009-2010 academic year.
Following the panel’s presentation, Dean Jeffrey Hutter introduced Founder and President of the Academy for Academic Leadership Dr. N. Karl Hayden as the keynote speaker for the event. Dr. Hayden presented a lecture titled, "Critical Thinking: Where is the Evidence?”
Associate Dean for Institutional Planning and Evaluation Dr. Deborah Fournier presented a workshop titled, "Constructing Evaluation Rubrics When Assessing Student Learning and Conducting Faculty Searches," which discussed the design of fair and equitable assessments.
Posters were presented during the lunch break in Hiebert Lounge, with four groups representing GSDM. Vinodh Bhoopathi DPH 10, Samar Mashabi DPH 09, Clinical Instructor Thayer Scott, and Professor and Director of the Division of Dental Public Health Dr. Ana Karina Mascarenhas presented a poster titled, "Knowledge, Attitudes, and Opinions on Bioterrorism Preparedness in Dental Professionals: A Comparative Study." This research was selected as an award winning abstract and Bhoopathi presented a lecture to the attendees following the awards presentations.
Courtney Brady DMD 10, Assistant Director of APEX and Extramural Programs Ms. Kathy Held, and Dr. Mascarenhas presented a poster titled, "Evaluating Program White Coat a Dental Pipeline Program for Children." Office of Educational Research and Evaluation Administrative Assistant Sarah Johnson, Senior Research Analyst Michaela George, Research Analyst Kristina Franke, and Program Coordinator Linda Sudlesky presented a poster titled, "Linking Faculty Exemplars to Research on Effective College Teaching Behaviors." Dr. Mascarenhas, Hosam Alrqiq DPH 09, and Associate Professor Dr. Paul Farsai presented a poster titled, "Evaluating a Cultural Competency Curriculum in Dentistry."
Teaching awards were also presented and GSDM Clinical Associate Professor Dr. Shiro Kamachi received the Proctor & Gamble Award for Excellence in Teaching Clinical Sciences and Clinical Associate Professor Dr. Steven Roberts received the Spencer N. Frankl Award for Excellence in Teaching.
