Orthodontic Resident Wins Research Competition

Junior orthodontic resident Khiem Pham-Nguyen won "Best-of-Show" honors in the student research poster competition November 6 at the combined meeting of the Northeast Society of Orthodontists (NESO) and Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists (MASO) at the Atlantis Hotel, Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Dr. Pham-Nguyen’s poster, which is based on his thesis entitled, "Micro-CT Analysis of Osteopenia Following Selective Alveolar Decortication and Tooth Movement," won him a $500 cash award and $500 to help defray travel and lodging expenses. MASO advanced orthodontic training program directors judged the poster against entries from all 13 advanced orthodontic training programs in the NESO region, which includes all New England states and New York.

Pham-Nguyen, who was mentored for his MSD project by Chair of the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics Dr. Donald Ferguson, received research guidance and resource support from Dr. Roberto Carvalho, assistant professor of orthodontics; Dr. Elise Morgan, Boston University assistant professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering; Dr. Alpdogan Kantarci, assistant professor of periodontology and oral biology; and Dr. Thomas Van Dyke, director of the Clinical Research Center.
