Research by incoming faculty member highlighted in The New York Times
Incoming faculty member Pascual Restrepo’s latest paper, joint with MIT’s Daron Acemoglu, was the subject of an article in the New York Times on March 28, 2017.
The Times article discusses their very important finding that robots and automation have had large, negative effects on human employment and wages in blue-collar industries. These job displacement effects have hit some geographic areas more than others, but raise the prospect of more widespread effects in the future with the next wave of technology. Restrepo is quoted in the article as saying “the data have made me worried about the communities directly exposed to robots.”
