SENATE PASSES DATA REPORTING LEGISLATION

Last week, the U.S. Senate passed the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act (S. 944), which would require the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to establish federal data standards and eliminate duplicative financial reporting requirements in order to reduce the cost of complying with federal regulations. The bill specifies that OMB should consult with university stakeholders regarding implementation, and the measure was endorsed by the Association of American Universities. The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to approve the bill shortly and send it to the President to be signed into law.

COMMITTEE PASSES EDUCATION RESEARCH BILL

The House Committee on Education and the Workforce unanimously approved the Strengthening Education through Research Act (H.R. 4366) last week, a bill which would renew the research programs of the Institute for Education Sciences (IES) at the U.S. Department of Education. The measure gives the director of IES more latitude to determine the agency’s research priorities and strengthens IES’s peer review process by requiring peer review for any award more than $100,000. The bill will need to be approved by the full Congress before it can become law.

SENATOR WARREN VISITS BU

The Initiative on Cities hosted Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) for a campus visit on Monday. Warren joined former Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Professor Graham Wilson, the Initiative’s directors, for a roundtable discussion with Boston biomedical research leaders regarding the importance of the National Institutes of Health. Warren later discussed the federal government’s response to student loan debt with BU students.
