NEW COMMITTEES FOR MASS. DELEGATION

Several members of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation will receive new committee assignments as the new session of Congress begins, giving the Commonwealth expanded reach into key policy areas. Congressman Joe Kennedy (D) will serve on the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee, which oversees health care, manufacturing, and medical research. Rep. Katherine Clark (D) secured a slot on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, which has jurisdiction over higher education. Freshman Rep. Seth Moulton (D) received his top choice with a spot on the House Armed Services Committee. Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D) and Ed Markey (D) added the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, respectively, bolstering the Massachusetts delegation’s influence in environmental issues.

HUMANITIES CHAIRMAN UNVEILS NEW INITIATIVE

National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Chairman William “Bro” Adams delivered a speech at the National Press Club on Thursday, outlining his goals for the agency. He unveiled the new “The Common Good: The Humanities in the Public Square” initiative, which aims to show how the humanities contributes to Americans’ daily lives. Adams also announced a partnership with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to republish out of print humanities books as free e-books for the public.

BU Research is offering an informational workshop on the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) on January 29. PCORI funds scholarly inquiry that improves the quality of health care decision-making. Jean Slutsky, Chief Engagement and Dissemination Officer at PCORI, will explain the Institute’s research goals and discuss its proposal review and award processes.
