Yannis Paschalidis of the College of Engineering participated in a panel on artificial intelligence in biomedical research at a National Science Foundation Smart and Connected Health program workshop on March 1st. 

BUZZ BITS…

  • The U.S. Senate confirmed Dr. Miguel Cardona as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education on Monday by a vote of 64 to 33. Cardona was previously the chief education officer for the state of Connecticut, and was endorsed by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
  • Last week, the Senate confirmed Jennifer Granholm as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy. Granholm is a former governor of Michigan. The Biden Administration has tasked her with achieving a goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
  • The Senate Foreign Relations Committee held a confirmation hearing for BU alumna Wendy Sherman (CAS ’71) to be Deputy Secretary of the State Department, the second highest position at the Department. Sherman previously served as the lead negotiator of the Iran nuclear deal for the Obama Administration.

GRANTS NEWS YOU CAN USE

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Defense Sciences Office (DSO) recently announced an opportunity to meet with DSO program managers to discuss mutual research interests. The meetings will be held in conjunction with the Discover DSO Day webinar in early summer 2021, which aims to familiarize and inform researchers on scientific and technical research topics of interest to DSO program managers. To be considered for a meeting with a DSO program manager, investigators must submit an executive summary that describes “innovative approaches and technologies that enable revolutionary advances” in science and engineering that fit within DSO’s mission. Executive summaries must be submitted by March 22nd at 4 p.m.

EVENTS NEWS YOU CAN USE

Join the Office of Research for “Mapping Your Research Path: An Early Career Workshop” on March 17th at 3:00 p.m. Intended for junior faculty embarking on their research career, the workshop will consist of an introduction to the wide range of resources and support provided by the University’s Federal Relations and Foundation Relations teams. The goal is to equip early career faculty with the tools needed to be successful at identifying and securing external funding for their research.
