Elaine Nsoesie Mentioned in EurekAlert and Medical and Life Science News

Dr. Elaine Nsoesie, a BU Data Science Faculty Fellow at the Hariri Institute for Computing was mentioned in an article by EurekAlert, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)’s news release platform since 1996.

The article talked about Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH)’s study on the strong correlation between prominent public personalities talking about their miscarriage and preterm birth leading to a spike in twitter users sharing their own experiences. The study also explored the gap in the knowledge and support towards users having undergone such experiences. Dr. Nsoesie believes that these kinds of studies can be helpful to bridge the gap and identify misinformation among the public which could further lead on to people offering support to their peers and help them overcome this experience.

Dr. Nsoesie believes “Most individuals who self-disclosed a miscarriage in our data did not appear to have been offered any type of mental health support as part of medical management of their miscarriage. The need for emotional and psychological support seems to drive individuals to seek information and community online.” Along with being a senior author in the study, Dr. Nsoesie is also an assistant professor at BUSPH and applies data science to global health problems.

In her association with the Hariri Institute for Computing, Dr. Nsoesie has been working on improving health particularly by monitoring chronic and infectious diseases with the help of digital data and technology.
