IoC Co-Director, Tom Menino, addresses Harvard Crisis Leadership Symposium
On April 8th, Initiative on Cities co-director Tom Menino addressed more than three hundred attendees at a symposium at Boston’s Hynes Convention Center, “A Tale of Our City: Meta-Leadership Lessons from the Boston Marathon Bombings Response”. The event, hosted by the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative at Harvard, examined the cross-sector leadership response in the immediate aftermath of the 2013 Boston Marathon attacks.
Critical to the effectiveness of the response were years of preparation for a terrorist attack targeting a major public event, reinforced through mass trauma simulation exercises. Panels discussed the notion of “swarm intelligence” and the importance of existing relationships among government and agency leaders.
