The Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future is pleased to announce its 2016-17 Faculty Research Fellows.

With seed funding from the Pardee Center, the four new Faculty Research Fellows will launch three-year interdisciplinary research projects, joining the six ongoing projects underway by the 2015-16 cohort of 10 Fellows. Over the course of their projects, the Faculty Research Fellows will produce Pardee Center publications and lead Pardee Center-sponsored seminars or other events related to their research. In all, the Fellows represent eight different departments in four colleges/schools from across the university.

This year’s Faculty Research Fellows are:

Prof. Jillian Goldfarb (Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering), Prof. Wendy Heiger-Bernays (Environmental Health), and Prof. David Glick (Political Science) will integrate their expertise in science, health, and policy to research global sustainable water access. The team will develop novel technology for the degradation of microorganisms in water in developing and industrialized urban areas, create a risk assessment model to predict the impact of that technology on human health, and perform surveys and case study research to understand public opinion surrounding water reuse policies.

Prof. Richard B. Primack (Biology) will establish a Pardee Center Working Group of researchers from BU and neighboring institutions on Leaf Emergence and Fall (LEaF) — the seasonal shifts in leaves emerging in spring and falling in autumn —  which affects ecological relationships, ecosystem processes, and economic activities, and, in turn, policies regarding forestry, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and economic planning.
