Pardee Center Welcomes Visiting Scholars Jianguo Liu and Pallab Mozumder
The Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future recently welcomed Prof. Jianguo Liu as a Visiting Scholar and Prof. Pallab Mozumder as a Sabbatical Scholar.
Prof. Liu, an Associate Professor at Peking University in China, is an expert on the Chinese regulatory system for chemicals, and he has also been a Chinese delegate to major international chemicals meeting. He is working with Faculty Associate Prof. Henrik Selin to address the challenge of globally managing chemicals in a way that protects the environment and human health over the next few decades, and the international institutions and cooperation that will be necessary to deal with existing and emerging threats. Comparing the experience of multiple regulatory systems is critical to inform the development of a global framework to deal with the challenges of chemical pollution, which involves an increasingly multinational chemicals industry and environmental problems that cross international borders. Prof. Liu’s perspective on the opportunities and challenges for global chemicals management help inform our thinking about how global chemicals institutions can meet the challenges posed by rapid development while ensuring sustainable development.
Prof. Mozumder, an environmental economist with expertise in socioeconomic aspects of natural hazards, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth & Environment with a joint appointment in the Department of Economics at Florida International University (FIU). He also coordinates the Social Science Research Lab at the International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC) at FIU. His current research focuses on migration and other climate adaptation strategies in Bangladesh, contrasting the policy approaches for resilience in developing countries to those undertaken in places like the Florida Keys and Miami Beach, where he is currently based.
