Experts Discuss Global Health & the Social Sciences at Pardee Center Seminar

The Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future recently hosted a panel discussion convened by Faculty Research Fellow Prof. Joseph Harris reflecting on the Symposium on Global Health & the Social Sciences, an effort he led to bring together nearly 30 leading anthropologists, political scientists, and sociologists to contribute to evolving discussions on the role of the social sciences in global health.

Harris was joined by Siri Suh, an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Brandeis University, and Jon Shaffer, a Ph.D. student in the BU Department of Sociology, to share what took place at the symposium and important developments that have occurred since then. Focusing on five themes — global health governance, reproductive health and human rights, universalism, infectious disease response, and access to pharmaceuticals — the symposium was an opportunity for participants to share various methods and approaches in global health research from the perspectives of the three social science disciplines. The symposium resulted in a report, compiled by Shaffer and published in June 2018 by the Pardee Center.
