Faculty Associate Muhammad Zaman Awarded Guggenheim Fellowship
Muhammad Zaman, a professor of Biomedical Engineering and a Faculty Associate at the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, was recently awarded a 2020 Guggenheim Fellowship. Awarded annually by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Fellowship recognizes individuals who have “demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts.” The 2020 cohort includes 175 scholars, artists, and writers chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants.
In its announcement, the Foundation recognized Prof. Zaman’s work on improving health care access for low-income communities, especially refugees. He co-founded the Boston University Initiative for Interdisciplinary Approaches to Forced Displacement, a university-wide initiative to foster interdisciplinary collaborations among faculty, staff, and students in the emerging field of refugee studies.
His newest book, titled Biography of Resistance: The Epic Battle Between People and Pathogens, is on sale now. The book explores the rise of antibiotic resistance, which leads to more than 35,000 deaths from drug-resistant infections every year in the United States.
