Department Chair Graham Wilson, Doing Scholarly Work Outside of BU

Professor Graham Wilson is part of an external review team for Purdue University’s Political Science department. He said “External reviews are one of the many accountability mechanisms in academic life. But you don’t go in looking to find fault but rather to try to make helpful suggestions. And I learn a lot by seeing how other departments work.” Wilson has been part of external reviews before including at Oxford University (UK) and the National University of Singapore.

Professor Wilson has started his term as President of the British Politics Group of the American Political Science Association. Wilson said “Understanding UK politics is important not only because the UK is a close ally of the US and major economic power but also because the British political system has traditionally been the system which is used as point of comparison with our own.”The BPG works to foster the study of British politics in the USA.

In addition, Professor Wilson is to present a paper at a conference in Berlin at the Hertie School in November on the impact of the Crash on our thinking about governance. Wilson said ”The Crash challenged many beliefs about governance that had been popular in the last two decades including the virtues of de-regulation, the self correcting properties of markets and the view that budgetary targets for governments would insure economic stability. The Hertie School conference explores where ideas about good governance go from here.”
