2015 United Methodist Scholar/Teacher of the Year

From Dr. Jean Morrison, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer

Each year, a distinguished member of the Boston University faculty is recognized for his or her “dedication and contributions to the learning arts and to the institution” with the United Methodist Scholar/Teacher of the Year award. This is a special honor established and endowed by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church. The dual role of scholar and teacher lies at the heart of Boston University’s mission. It is modeled each day across our campus by the hundreds of outstanding faculty members who lead by example, both in their respective fields of research and in their classrooms.

This year’s nominating process yielded a truly exceptional class of candidates, each with remarkable talent and ability to inspire the best from students. After considerable discussion and deliberation, I am delighted to announce that the winner of this year’s United Methodist Scholar/Teacher of the Year award is Professor Carrie Preston of the Department of English. Professor Preston is also Director of the Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies Program in the College of Arts & Sciences.

For nearly a decade, Professor Preston’s highly original, prize-winning scholarship on modernist literature, gender theory, and modern drama and performance have been matched perhaps only by her accomplishments as a teacher: the intensely thoughtful discussions that characterize her classes and the commitment to intellectual rigor and joy of learning she’s instilled in the scores of students she has taught and mentored. Professor Preston’s exciting interdisciplinary research, her infectious enthusiasm for her subject matter and for teaching, and the esteem she’s earned from colleagues and students as a leader in her field, in the classroom, and in the campus community make her an exceptional selection this year.

Please join me in congratulating Professor Preston on this remarkable achievement.
