Department and Title: Romance Studies, Lecturer in Spanish

Hometown: Bogotá, Colombia

What is your educational background?

I hold a Ph.D. from Boston University in Hispanic Language and Literature and a B.A. in History from Universidad del Valle (Cali, Colombia).

What will you be working on this academic year?

My scholarly work focuses on the importance of culture in the process of language learning. I am currently conducting research on the role of food as a unique site of exchange among the Arabic, European, Amerindian, and African cultures that have shaped the Hispanic World.

I plan to submit a Spanish language course proposal to the BU Hub. In this course, the students will examine how food ingredients have traveled across space and time, how food habits have accompanied great migrations in Spain and Latin America, and how culinary customs have revealed the dynamics of nation-building processes.

Why did you go into your field of study?

I love teaching and conducting research. Teaching Spanish language and literature has given me the opportunity to expose my students to the social heterogeneity of the Spanish-speaking countries and to incite in them a cross-cultural understanding of the world.

What excites you the most about working at CAS? What has been most rewarding?

I regard CAS as an ideal setting for my work as a teacher and as a researcher because of the college’s commitment to inclusiveness and high academic standards. Teaching Spanish at CAS has given me the opportunity to grow as a teacher and as an intellectual. I have enjoyed teaching students from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds; in the Romance Studies Department, I have been exposed to several workshops on pedagogy and to diverse instructional practices.

What are your favorite hobbies?

I love cooking. I enjoy mixing ingredients and experimenting with new flavors, but most of all, I enjoy the experience of sharing a cultural experience through the art of cooking and fine eating.
