Teaching Social Justice in World Language Classrooms, Hiromi Miyagi-Lusthaus, Senior Lecturer in Japanese, World Languages & Literatures

Language teaching has traditionally neglected issues of social justice, but call for a change had been made and the “21st Century Skill” program that urges teachers to instill skills of ‘civic, ethical and social-justice literacy.’ Raising student awareness of social context has always been part of language instruction, but in reality, the focus has been limited. Language reflects the culture, and it alters with changes in the culture. The presenter will explain the necessity of teaching social issues and social justice in language classrooms in order to nurture global citizens who would communicate and relate to others consciously, and introduce some materials created to advance those objectives.
