NeMLA Roundtable: Accessibility as a Shared Responsibility

Planning a course, whether a traditional face to face course or an online one, is never easy. It requires a lot of planning and organization, but how much attention do we really pay to the actual design we give to our courses? How careful are we when choosing the outline and the presentation of the course material and content especially in an on-line course? Are our courses accessible to all and for all? These are some of the questions this round table seeks to explore and possibly answer. Our discussion will focus on the importance of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) with a particular attention to the way UDL can and should be used in the language classes. Universal Design for Learning requires a proactive process of designing course content in order to achieve the highest level of functionality and to make the learning experience as fluid and pleasant as possible; and that requires purposeful consideration and strategy in all areas of course planning and design. We invite papers that deal with all and any aspect of the course development framework that current theories of Universal Design for Learning offer. The idea is to discuss how these concepts could apply in our own school and department and how could we rework our courses to turn them into robust and accessible platform for our students
