Harvard – Camões Conference
Please share the Call for Papers below with anyone who might be interested. The Camões@Harvard Committee is especially eager to consider abstracts from disciplines that are historically underrepresented in Camões Studies.
Harvard University currently holds one of the world’s largest collections of rare editions of the works of Luís Vaz de Camões in its Houghton Library and, to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the publication of Os Lusíadas, will host a series of virtual and in-person events with scholars from around the world throughout the fall semester of 2022. Camões@Harvard is organized by Harvard’s Department of Romance Languages and Literatures (RLL) and will kick off its events with a conference October 13-15 2022. Presentation proposals will be accepted until October 31st, 2021.
Presentations can include, yet are not limited to, any of the following topics:
- Camões’ legacy in world cultures and literatures;
- critical reception of Camões’ works;
- bibliographic approaches to editions ofOs Lusíadas;
- translations of Camões into other languages;
- decolonial/postcolonial studies and the role ofOs Lusíadas in the Portuguese Empire;
- the Portuguese maritime expansion and its impact on Africa, Asia and the Americas;
- contemporary debates on power and colonialism which offer reassessments of the sixteenth century epic;
- comparisons between the work of Camões and of other poets and artists;
- artistic interpretations of the Camões’ works from around the world.
Artistic contributions and perspectives that challenge canonical readings of Camões are welcome. There will be no registration fee.
