“During the celebration of the XII Women’s Colloquium at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico, I was part of the panel “Gender and Narrative”, in which the participation of women inside and outside the creative literary environment was discussed. Together with the other panelists, my paper focused on analyzing the narrative development of a female character with connotations of advanced performance and simple pro-feminist cataloging. My presentation focussed on the character of the shepherd Marcela in the work of Don Quixote and its protofeminist characteristics – a term used by Dr. L. Fourquet-Reed for La Lozana andaluza. The paper the proto-feminist factors present in the construction of the character of Marcela and the innovation of Cervantes in Renaissance literature, and the relevance of such for studies of contemporary genres.”
