2nd Language Learning & Disabilities Conference Goes Global

This past weekend, BU romance Studies organized our third annual 2nd Language Learning & Disabilities conference. With the Covid epidemic still ongoing, the event was held in a virtual format, enabling participation and presentations from around the globe. Check out the map below showing where participants were located!

As always, the conference strove to provide second language educators with knowledge and tools to enable them to better involve persons with disabilities in an inclusive classroom environment.

Maria Datel, one of the conference organizers, said that “The idea is basically to learn about different learning disabilities that affect or interfere with language learning. If we learn about those, we can improve our programs to accommodate people with disabilities.” Datel added that the conference organizers think about this issue through the lens of social justice, as a component of making language learning more accessible for all.

BU’s student newspaper, the Daily Free Press, covered the event and provides a more in-depth article about it on their website.

Conference organizers Maria Datel and Elena Carrion-Guerrero (pictured below) are both lecturers in Spanish at Boston University. Great work, both of you! And many thanks to all who participated in the conference.
