Sanchez Presents at XXIX International Congress of Hispanic Studies & Literature
Doctoral student Jorge Sanchez presented recently at the XXIX International Congress of Hispanic Studies and Literature. Jorge tells us:
“I presented a paper that examined Vera Giaconi’s “Reunion”, a short story which contains everyday situations in which we can see a fantastic entity that could be interpreted as a metaphor, one whose meaning depends on each reader. Among the possible interpretations, I demonstrated that there is a critique of the traditional conception of ‘the family’ and the social impositions regarding motherhood by the patriarchal and androcentric ideology discussed by Rita Segato and Myriam Jehenson. Thus, using the theory of the fantastic by Tzvetan Todorov, Jaime Alazraki, David Roas and Teresa López-Pellisa, and through a close reading of the story, I illustrated that the contemporary fantastic genre continues to be an effective literary tool to explore and criticize the contemporary extraliterary reality of the readers.”
