Alumnus Heads Compliance for Health System.
Joshua A. Boxer (’01) has been named executive director of regulatory compliance for the University of Miami Health System (UHealth).
Boxer stepped into the new role on January 9, joining the UHealth compliance, risk, and quality team. He will have system-wide regulatory and accreditation oversight.
As the son of two academic pediatric specialists, Boxer says he always expected to go to medical school, “until I realized that requires being able to handle the sight of blood, which let’s just say is not my best skill set.” Instead, he decided to pursue health law and policy, which brought him to the School of Public Health.
“I enjoy working within the health system to improve processes and ensure compliance,” he says, “which I believe results in improvement in the quality of patient care.”
After focusing on health law for his MPH, Boxer went on to receive his JD from the University of Miami School of Law. He is board-certified as a specialist in health law, the highest level of recognition by the Florida Bar of the competency and experience of attorneys in specialized areas. He is also certified in healthcare compliance by the Compliance Certification Board.
Boxer began his healthcare career in 2005 as part of the Mount Sinai Medical Center medical malpractice defense team, and went on to join a New York healthcare firm representing physicians, physician groups, and other healthcare providers. Boxer then returned to Florida as senior counsel in another firm’s health law practice group. In 2015 he joined the University of Miami Office of the General Counsel as assistant general counsel, providing legal guidance to the UHealth system.
As he begins his new role as executive director of regulatory compliance, he says, “I am excited and honored by the opportunity the UHealth system has granted me.”
