The Hubie Jones Lecture in Urban Health 2015

The Hubie Jones Lecture in Urban Health was established in 2011 in honor of dean emeritus Hubie Jones (’57), the School of Social Work dean from 1977 to 1993. Jones has helped shape Boston’s civic landscape for over 45 years, and been integral in numerous community organizations within Boston’s African-American population and throughout all Boston neighborhoods. The annual symposium features prominent leaders at the intersection of health and social justice.

This year’s fourth annual Hubie Jones Lecture in Urban Health will take place on Saturday, October 24, 2015 from 10-11:30 am in the Kenmore Classroom Building, Room 101 at 565 Commonwealth Avenue.

1.5 Social Work CECs will be awarded.

Dean-Galea-crop-300dpi-for-PRINTWe are pleased to announce that this year School of Public Health Dean Sandro Galea will present, “A Focus on What Matters: A Foundational Approach to Improving the Health of Populations.”

In his presentation, Dean Galea will explore the promise and challenges of precision medicine–sometimes called personalized medicine, which aims to tailor clinical treatment to the individual characteristics of patients. President Obama recently announced a new Precision Medicine Initiative. The scientific leadership at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Academy of Medicine, and U.S. universities have taken up the challenge. In evaluating the concerns and potential impacts of a focus on precision medicine, Galea will argue that we must explore broader patterns of health and the health of populations rather than of persons.
