Associate Dean Lena Lundgren and MED Professor Steve Brady Receive $900,000 Grant to Increase Substance Abuse Screening and Treatment

“There is a significant need for behavioral health professionals to be trained in empirically tested behavioral health, screening, brief intervention and treatment methods,” Associate Dean for Research Lena Lundgren said. “This is especially true as the Affordable Care Act now covers behavioral health–including addiction treatment.”

10-3174-SWWCARS-048-e1390497581698Lundgren is the Principal Investigator for “BU-SBIRT: A Multi-Disciplinary Training Grant for Health Professionals in Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment.” The three-year $900,000 grant was recently awarded to Lundgren and Co-PI Professor Steve Brady (School of Medicine) by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Lundgren and Brady will develop training programs for health professionals to provide evidence-based screening and brief intervention methods for patience at risk of a substance abuse disorder. The goal is to extend the continuum of health care across the United States to assist those in receiving needed treatment and, ultimately, in preventing substance use disorders.
