BUSSW Presence Significant at APHA Conference in Boston
Several BUSSW faculty, staff, alumni, and students presented at the 134th Annual Meeting of the American Public Health Association, which was held November 5 to 8 in Boston. Faculty presenters included Professors Scott Miyake Geron, Judith Gonyea, Hyeouk Chris Hahm, Rob Hudson, Lena Lundgren, Joe Merighi, Ruth Paris, and Betty Ruth; Bronwyn Keefe, of the Institute for Geriatric Social Work, also presented. Alumni and student presenters included Christina Bethke, Micaela Cohen, Joya Lonsdale, Geoff Wilkinson, and Jamie Wyatt.
The presentation and poster session topics were: treatment of refugees and survivors of torture; evidence based intervention with older adults; treating neuropsychiatric symptoms in Alzheimer’s disease; a content analysis of social work literature for prevention and health promotion; sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) self-examination and testing behaviors of Asian American/Pacific Islander college students; successful strategies for increasing public health funding in state budgets; continuous HIV risk behaviors; predictors of drug treatment type for women who inject drugs; gender differences in the HIV/AIDS risky sexual behaviors and STDs among Asian American/Pacific Islander young men and women; language use at home, health status, and access to health care among ethnic minority adolescents; smoking, alcohol, and drug use among Asian American sexual minority adolescents; Handbook of Aging and the Social Sciences at 30; and experiences of Latina mothers in a home-visiting program.
The School also had an exhibit booth, in conjunction with the BU School of Public Health.
