Dean Steketee Referenced in US News and The Buffalo News

The buzz around hoarding is not dying down any time soon. Hoarding is not only a disorder on its own, but is also appearing as a symptom in other compulsive disorders. In an article by US News, Dean Gail Steketee was referenced for her expertise. The article, aptly titled, “How to Battle A Shopping Addiction,” explains the proper ways to treat compulsive shopping and where to get help.  Dean Steketee noted that compulsive shopping has overlapping qualities of compulsive hoarding. In this regard, some people “acquire and collect so much stuff that it interferes with their lives and living space.” The article gives tips on how to interact with a compulsive shopper and eventually stop the compulsion to shop.

Similarly, the Buffalo News published an article, “The Compulsion to Hoard,” focusing specifically on hoarding, which cites Dean Steketee on multiple accounts. Like the US News article, The Buffalo News ties in other disorders that are common to compulsive hoarders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention deficit disorder. The article highlights Steketee’s work on diagnosing compulsive hoarding and the struggle to create a clear definition. Along with the Dean’s input, the article lists the reasons behind hoarding, treatment options, and differences between collecting and when it goes too far.
