BU School of Social Work (BUSSW) is proud to announce that Lyndsey McMahan, PhD and director of inclusive pedagogy, has been accepted into the inaugural Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Teaching Academy, a national initiative aimed at advancing excellence in social work education.

The Teaching Academy brings together a select cohort of social work educators from across the country to engage in a year-long series of virtual workshops. Participants will focus on curriculum design, student engagement, inclusive pedagogy, instructional technology, and best practices in both online and in-person teaching. “While I’ve developed and led multiple initiatives like this—from inclusive pedagogy training series to onboarding programs and faculty learning communities—I know how important it is to keep learning,” says McMahan. “The topics covered by the Teaching Academy are not only relevant to my classroom teaching, but deeply connected to the types of supports I’m building for others.”

McMahan’s acceptance into this highly competitive program is a testament to her leadership in teaching innovation and her dedication to inclusive, anti-oppressive pedagogy. “Lyndsey’s selection reflects her deep commitment to teaching innovation, faculty development, and her excellent work supporting our large network of part-time instructors through inclusive and anti-oppressive pedagogy,” said Ellen Devoe, professor and associate dean for academic affairs. “We are excited for the new perspectives and practical tools Lyndsey will gain from this opportunity and look forward to seeing how she will bring that learning back to benefit the whole of our BUSSW teaching community.”

McMahan has nearly two decades of professional experience in social work, international development, organizational learning, and DEI. Her passion for human-centered program design, empathic leadership, and equity is evident in both her scholarship and her teaching. Before joining BUSSW, Dr. McMahan served as the assistant director of Global Field Education at Boston College, where she built field partnerships in over 20 countries and mentored social work students in global practice. She has taught social work courses at Boston College, Simmons University, and Lesley University, and she is a former Peace Corps volunteer in Zambia. Her research and publications include a wide range of topics related to the social determinants of health in Sub-Saharan Africa and the U.S. South. In 2021, she was honored with the Emerging Scholar Award from the International Conference on Knowledge, Culture, and Change in Organizations.
