Growing up in Virginia, 乔尔·克里斯蒂安·吉尔 developed a knack for storytelling—by fibbing to his friends that he owned all the newest and coolest toys. He pretended that like Harry Potter, he “was just one giant-on-a-motorcycle away from a major adventure at Hogwarts—when I was just a poor kid from the projects,” he said at a panel discussion titled African American Storytelling in Sequential Art, held on campus during 校友的周末, September 28 to October 1. As an adult, 吉尔’s imagination led him to tell more truthful, meaningful stories—such as that of 贝斯里夫斯, a frontier hero and black deputy US marshal—in his acclaimed graphic novel 奇怪的水果：黑人历史中不为人知的叙述 (Fulcrum Publishing, 2014).

In addition to participating in the panel discussion, 吉尔 (CFA’04), chair of foundations at the 新罕布什尔艺术学院, received a Distinguished 校友 Award from the College of Fine Arts at a ceremony emceed by Emmy-winning actor 迈克尔·奇科里斯 (CFA’85) September 30. 在整个周末，吉尔是众多来自各行各业的校友之一。

On Saturday, three alums were celebrated at the 波士顿大学午宴最佳奖暨第69届年度校友奖. 校友奖是波士顿大学校友的最高荣誉。

Golden Globe–winning producer 邦妮阿诺德 (COM’78) wondered if there had been some mistake as she accepted her 2016 Distinguished 校友 Award. “It is really not the school that should be honoring me,” said the copresident of feature animation at 梦工厂动画. “应该尊敬学校的人是我。 毫无疑问，如果没有波士顿大学，我就不会有现在的事业，因为我不会成为现在的我。”

The third Distinguished 校友 Award was presented to civil rights activist and retired Methodist minister 吉尔伯特·h·考德威尔 (STH’58), who screened his documentary 从塞尔玛到石墙：我们还在那里吗？—about the relationship between the civil rights and LGBTQ movements—on Thursday at the School of Theology. 82岁的考德威尔在他的获奖感言中重申了他对激进主义的承诺，他说：“我想参与这场斗争，直到我死。” 最后，他带领满屋子的人即兴演唱了一首在民权游行中流行的自由歌曲《今晨醒来（我的思想停留在自由上）》。

Alums attended a host of other events over the weekend, including a pregame cookout and men’s ice hockey exhibition game against the 爱德华王子岛大学黑豹队, which the 梗犬队以10比2获胜; 与杰出校友的交流活动和小组讨论； and a conversation about diversity and inclusion led by 肯尼斯·爱尔摩 (SED’87), associate provost and dean of students. 周五，Elmore获得了教育学院颁发的Ida M. Calling the recipients awe-inspiring, Grove said, “Alums like these help current 波士顿大学 students achieve their goals.”
