Councilor Ayanna Pressley, now serving her third term, was first elected as an At-Large Boston City Councilor in 2009, making history as the first woman of color elected to the City Council in its 100 year history. She represents the entire city of Boston, so the office is responsible for responding to the needs of 22 diverse neighborhoods and responding to issues that impact the entire city. Councilor Pressley is Chair of the Committee on Healthy Women, Families and Communities and much of her policy work focuses on addressing the unique needs of girls and women and the factors that destabilize families and communities.

Office Description: Councilor Ayanna Pressley, now serving her third term, was first elected as an At-Large Boston City Councilor in 2009, making history as the first woman of color elected to the City Council in its 100 year history. The City Council is a legislative body made up of 13 members (4 at-large and 9 district City Councilors). Councilor Pressley represents the entire city of Boston, so the office is responsible for responding to the needs of 22 diverse neighborhoods, and responding to issues that impact the entire city. Councilor Pressley is Chair of the Committee on Healthy Women, Families and Communities and much of her policy work focuses on addressing the unique needs of girls and women and the factors that destabilize families and communities.
Internship Description
As an intern in Councilor Pressley’s office, you will have first-hand experience in the workings of city government, including learning about the Council’s legislative process and constituent services.
Intern responsibilities will include assistance with general office administration such as:
- Answering constituent calls
- Assisting with the day-to-day management of the Councilor’s schedule
- Processing letters of support and resolutions
- Supporting staff on special projects and policy research, as needed
- Attending City Council, community, and other meetings, as appropriate
- Filing and managing incoming mail
Qualifications
Successful candidates will have:
- Excellent telephone etiquette, communication and organizational skills, as well as excellent verbal and written skills;
- Desire to learn and professionally grow;
- General computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint;
- Respect for details; ability to execute accurately at a high level without excess supervision;
- A willingness to work in a fast-paced environment that demands all staff and interns value and contribute to all tasks of the office;
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously;
- An appreciation and commitment to uphold high standards of professionalism, compassion, and confidentiality of sensitive matters.
