BU Undergraduate Academic Advising Mission Statement
Academic Advising is integral to the teaching mission of the University and engages students in a collaborative process to explore academic and co-curricular opportunities as part of a plan to realize academic, career, and life goals.
At Sargent, advising is a collaborative process. There are two undergraduate academic counselors and 40 faculty advisors. Students are assigned faculty advisors who either teach in the area of their advisees’ major and/or are employed in professions that their advisees most often pursue. Faculty advisors help with course selection, degree requirements, internship placements and career advice.

Sargent Academic Counselors
Our Academic Counselors help students with career issues, counseling, academics and suggestions designed to help students balance the variety of activities, academic pursuits and challenges that arise during their academic career. Academic Counselors help with course schedules within students’ majors, but also work with them on processes beyond the standard curriculum such as changing majors, fitting in minors, dual degrees, study abroad, and other academic opportunities. To make an appointment, call 617-353-2713 or drop by room 207 in Sargent.
Faculty Advisors
All full-time faculty members assist a group of students. Please note that any student may ask his or her department chair or program director for a change of advisor if he/she feels such a change will improve the advising situation. Faculty advisors are responsible for:
- Reaching out to advisees outlining the procedures for making appointments and being available by appointment during office hours when students request meetings
- Consulting with students who have academic problems in order to assist them;
- Advising students of available Boston University counseling and other services, should they need further assistance;
- Meeting with their advisees at each registration period to approve courses selected by each student;
- Making recommendations concerning all aspects of course selection and graduation requirements.
Your faculty advisor is listed on StudentLink in the Academics tab under Academic Advising
